Abstract


The Relationship between Teacher Candidates' Levels of Emotional Intelligence and Listening Skills
Hearing is all the elements of sound that go to the brain through the ears of the human being, not with the will of the person. In listening, the desired one is selected from multiple voices, so listening is a conscious activity. Listening refers to an active and interactive process, not a passive reception of the auditory input by the student. Effective listening requires the ability of understanding the feelings of the other person. Understanding the feelings of the other is also largely related to the concept of emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence includes emotional abilities such as expressing emotions correctly, integrating emotions into cognitive processes, understanding emotions, and understanding the effects of emotions on various situations. The concept of emotional intelligence is considered as a whole of skills that largely determines the success of the individual in life. The purpose of this research is to show whether there is a relationship between teacher candidates' levels of emotional intelligence and listening skills or not. This research which has the characteristics of relational screening model was conducted to determine whether there is a relationship between the levels of emotional intelligence and listening skills of teacher candidates who participated in the pedagogical formation program at Ondokuz Mayıs University Faculty of Education, or not. In this study, it was tried to determine whether there is a relationship between teacher candidates' levels of emotional intelligence and listening skills or not by using two scales. 1258 teacher candidates who participated in the pedagogical formation program at Ondokuz Mayıs University Faculty of Education in 2015-2016 school year are the population of this research. In this context, scales were applied to 500 participants. By subtracting 9 scales that were not filled in accordance with the directive from the scales, 491 scales were included in the evaluation. Two scales were used in this study to collect data. "Listening Ability Scale" developed by Cihangir Çankaya (2012) and "Schutte Emotional Intelligence Scale" to determine the levels of emotional intelligence of teacher candidates –adapted to Turkish by Tatar, Tok and Saltukoğlu (2011) were used in order to determine the listening abilities of teacher candidates. Descriptive statistics (arithmetic mean, standard deviation) and inferential statistics (Spearman Correlation Coefficient) were used for the analysis of the data. As a result of the analyzes made; there was a statistically low correlation between the levels of emotional intelligence and listening ability of the teacher candidates in the negative direction.
