Abstract
The Use of Vocabulary Learning Strategies in Anatolian Imam Hatip High School Students’ Learning Arabic as a Foreign Language
One of the common problems faced by students in Anatolian Imam Hatip High
Schools where Arabic is taught as a foreign language is the word learning. In addition
to the difficulty of grammatical structure of the target language, students have difficulty
in learning vocabulary. Therefore, vocabulary learning strategies, which are part of
the language learning strategies, form the basis of our study. This research aimed to
determine the vocabulary learning strategies used by Anatolian Imam Hatip High
School students in learning Arabic as a foreign language. This research was conducted
at Central Anatolian İmam Hatip High School, Hacı Ahmet Ersöz Anatolian İmam
Hatip High School and Işık Kent Anatolian High School (Project) 195 (123 Girls - 72
Boys) in Isparta, during the academic year of the 2018-2019. The use of vocabulary
learning strategies of Anatolian Imam Hatip High School students was examined in
terms of gender, class and school variables. In order to investigate vocabulary learning
strategies of the students personal information form prepared by the researcher and
“Vocabulary Learning Strategies Questionnaire” which was arranged in accordance
with the taxonomy of vocabulary learning strategies developed by Schmitt (1997) was
applied to the students. It was found that there is a significant difference based on usage
of vocabulary learning strategies between females and males in favour of male students.
There were no significant differences in terms of the class, and a significant difference
was found in the use of Cognitive Strategy between students of Işık Kent Anatolian Imam
Hatip High School (Project) and Central Anatolian Imam Hatip High School. The results
of the study were discussed with the literature review and suggestions were made for the
use of vocabulary learning strategies in Arabic teaching.
