Abstract


The Investigation f Speech Anxiety Levels of University Students in Terms of Sportive Activity and Different Variables
The aim of this study was to determine the level of speech anxiety of university students and to examine them in terms of sportive activity and different variables. The research was carried out in the 2018/2019 academic year with a total of 606 students (319 girls and 287 boys) studying in different departments of Atatürk University Kazım Karabekir Education Faculty and Vocational School of Health Services. Data related to the study were collected by “Speech Anxiety Scale” developed by Yaman and Sofu (2013) and Demographic Information Form determined by the researchers. To determine the demographic characteristics of the students, frequency distribution, Independent Samples T test was used to examine the difference between two independent variables and speech anxiety, and One-Way Anova analysis was used to examine the difference between more than two variables and speech anxiety. All these tests were analyzed in SPSS 21 package program and the significance level was taken as p <0.05. As a result of the study, it was found that there was no significant difference between gender and speech anxiety levels of university students. Although there was no significant difference, it was observed that female students had low level of speech anxiety levels higher than male students. It was found that there was no significant difference between students' family structure and personal income levels and speech anxiety levels.As a result of the comparison of the anxiety levels of the students with the department they are studying, it was observed that the students who were studying in the Department of Physical Education and Sports Teaching had lower levels of speech anxiety than the students in the Psychological Counseling and Guidance Department and the Vocational School of Health Sciences. It was concluded that the level of speech anxiety of the students doing sports activities was lower than the students who did not do sports activities, there was no significant difference between the type and duration of sports activities and the level of speech anxiety. As a result; it was seen that sport activities had positive effects on decreasing speech anxiety levels of university students. According to this result, students should be directed to engage in sports activities in order to reduce speech anxiety levels. Studies should be conducted by identifying different variables that may have a positive effect on speech anxiety in students.
