Abstract
Medical Terms at Lehcetü’l -Lügat III (P – Z)
Ebu İshakzade Esad Mehmed Efendi was Shaykh al-İslam, music lover, composer,
music historian, a scholar and poet. Lehcetü'l-Lügat is one of the most important works
of Ebu İshakzade Esad Mehmed Efendi, who has served in various state positions starting
from the professorship and cadi, to the delegacy and the sheikh al-Islam. There are 3703
headwords in the work. Some items are described in a few lines, while others continue with
pages. Lehcetü'l-Lügat shows a dictionary feature from Turkish to Arabic and Persian,
even from Turkish to Turkish. This conscious Turkism and Turkishism of Esad Efendi give
him a privileged place in the field of linguistics. In the study, the words of medical science
were taken as in Lehcetü'l-Lügat and after the entry the current medical explanation
and the Latin name of the item were given. Subsequently, the content of substance in
Lehcetü'l-Lügat, the known benefits of the substance and a picture of the substance were
also included. In the study, only the medical benefits included in content were left within
the entry. It is thought that the medical benefits of plants, animals, stones or substances
included in the work being in line with past experiences will be important for those
interested in the subject, and those who study language, biology, zoology and chemistry
will benefit from the work in a period when alternative medicine is on the agenda.
