Abstract
Metaphor of Social Studies Teacher Candidates for the Concept of “Natıonal Holiday”
This study aims to determine social studies teacher candidates ' perceptions of the
concept of “national holiday” through metaphor. For this purpose, the metaphors
developed by social studies teachers for the concept of “national holiday” and the
conceptual categories in which the metaphors developed in terms of common features
were examined. Criteria samples were used for the purpose of determining the study
group. Muş Alparslan University Faculty of Education Social Studies teaching study
group 1. and 4. the class consists of students. A case science pattern from qualitative
research methods was used in the research. Candidates with structured form prepared
by the researcher " national holiday ............. because it is just like............... they were
asked to complete his sentence. The data obtained were analyzed by content analysis
method. When the research findings were examined, it was determined that 94 teacher
candidates developed 47 metaphors. Developed metaphors have been collected under
6 categories. Categories: national holidays as Independence, socio-cultural activity as
national holidays, vacation, national holidays, national holidays as a source of life, as is
the transfer of national holidays and other national and cultural value. Research findings
show that teacher candidates correctly perceive and interpret the concept of national
holiday. This is an indication that the knowledge that teachers have about the concept of
national holiday is sufficient and correct. However, social studies shows that the attitudes
of teachers towards the concept of national holiday are also positive.
