Abstract
The Concept of Education and Nurture Methods in Old Turkish Culture
The concept of nurture as a dictionary meaning; it has the meanings of teaching
science, teaching morality, punishing, nurturing and grow. The word nurture has a
structure that means all kinds of cognitive and moral development in raising the children
of Turkish people besides the structure used today and having more moral meaning.
There are traditional methods of nurture that enable the transfer of national identity
and consciousness to future generations based on thousands of years of experience and
knowledge of Turkish people. In the nomadic period, the education system, which is
intertwined with practical life rather than theory, has been focused on preparing young
people for life and adapting to their living conditions. Therefore, the transfer of the culture
that constitutes the social conscience to the individuals of the society has been through
education. Both the family and the society have accomplished this function together and
the Turkish culture has been brought to future generations. Fathers educated children
to adapt to the outside world, while mothers educated children to give their first moral
education and to ensure that their daughters could do their household chores. The activities
of cultural exploitation and destruction of all national values of the Turkic peoples living
in Turkestan within the USSR were carried out through education and language. Today,
the process of Europeanization and the spread of the European education system that
started with the Bologna process among all Turkish peoples is again through education
and language. In this study, using the concept analysis technique as a method, the
etymological and educational aspects of the “Nurture” concept were tried to be revealed
and their applications in Turkish culture were explained.
