Abstract


Metaphorical Perceptions of Social Studies Teacher Candidates on the Concept of Social Studies Teacher
This study was carrie dout with the purposeof identifying theviews of social studies teacher candidates, who will be the teachers of the future, on the concept of “social studies teacher” through metaphors and evaluating their points of view on social studies teaching and how they perceive this profession. The study group of the study consists of 127 social studies teacher candidates who were receiving education at a state university as freshman, junior, sophomore and senior students in the spring semester of the 2017-2018 academic year, using the convenience sampling method which is one of the purposeful sampling methods. The data of the study were obtained in line with the purpose of the study through filling out the statement, “Social Studies Teacher is like ………… because ………” in the form prepared by the researchers. Due to the nature of the study, while the phenomenology design which is one of the qualitative research methods was used, content analysis was used in the analysis of data in line with the qualitative research design. As a result of the analysis, the agreement percentage was calculated as 0.91 and 114 metaphors were produced by the candidates about the concept. The produced metaphors were then separated into categories according to their common characteristics as, “social studies teacher as the symbol of comprehensiveness, social studies teacher as trainer and developer, social studies teacher as a source of information, social studies teacher as a guidance and counsellor, social studies teacher as a source of life, social studies teacher as the indicator of hopelessness. ”It was seen that the metaphors preferred by the teacher candidates about the concept analyzed in the study mostly expressed positive judgments and the most stated metaphor was the “sun” (f=6).Among the categories, while the category which consisted of the highest number of metaphors (28) and frequency f=36) was “social studies teacher as the symbol of comprehensiveness, ” the category which consisted of the lowest number of metaphors (5) and frequency (f=8) was the “social studies teacher as the indicator of hopelessness, ” which was the only category with a negative judgment. In the “social studies teacher as the indicator of hopelessness” category, it was seen that the candidates expressed appointment difficulties which prevent them from carrying out their profession through metaphors.
