Abstract
Examining the Relation Between Self-Confidence and Negative Automatic Thoughts in Adolescents
This research aims to examine the relationship between adolescents' self-confidence
and negative automatic thoughts. The research was applied in relational screening
model. The study group of the study consisted of a total of 1026 adolescents, 475
girls and 551 boys selected from the secondary schools with the appropriate sampling
method in Konya centrum. Research data were collected using Self Confidence Scale
and Automatic Thoughts Scale. Pearson Moments Product Correlation technique and
multiple regression were used in the analysis of the data. As a result of the analysis of
the data, A moderate negative relationship was found between the self-confidence scale
internal self-confidence subscale mean scores and the automatic thoughts scale of the
individual's negative emotions and thoughts and hopelessness subscale mean scores. A
low level negative correlation was found between confusion-escape fantasies, personal
dissonance and desire to change, loneliness-isolation subscale mean scores. A low
negative correlation was found between the scores of adolescents' external self-esteem
subscale scores and negative self-thoughts scale, negative emotions and thoughts towards
the self, confusion-escape fantasies, personal dissonance and desire to change, lonelinessisolation
and hopelessness sub-dimension. It was determined that the negative emotions /
thoughts and despair subscales of the adolescents, which are among the sub-dimensions
of automatic thoughts scale, are a significant predictor of internal self-confidence. It was
also determined that the sub-dimension of the negative emotions / thoughts towards the
person was a significant predictor of external self-confidence.
