Abstract
The Impact of Interactive Reading on the Ability of Speaking in Terms of Teaching Turkish as a Foreign Language
This study that aims to reveal the impact of interactive reading method on the ability
of speaking in terms of teaching Turkish as a foreign language has been formed with
mixed pattern. While, in the quantitative domain of the study, experimental pattern with
control group is used, in the qualitative domain, the method of interview and content
analysis have been used. The foreign students studying at B2 level at a language center in
Ankara constitute the working group of the study. The Speaking Ability Assessment Form
(SAAF), which has been developed as a result of the review of literature on the field and
got its ultimate form in accordance with the opinions of the experts of the field, has been
used as assessment instrument. The speaking records of the students who have spoken on
the subjects that were chosen according to the levels have been graded by three scholars
who have the experience in that field at least ten years. In the experimental process of
six weeks, the activities of reading have been made with interactive reading method for
the experimental group while, to the control group, they have been made in accordance
with the instructions in Seven Seasons Turkish set. At the end of the experimental process,
the speeches of the students on the same subjects who have been made to speak on the
subjects of pre-test process have been recorded as post-test, and they have been scored
with SAAF. The date attained has been analyzed with quantitative and qualitative analysis
programs within electronic environment. According to the results of the study, the
method of interactive reading has affected the ability of speaking of the foreign students
positively; while the students state their positive opinions about interactive reading in
terms of the matters such as handling out-of-text subjects, interpreting and analyzing
the text better, asking questions, instructiveness, becoming ready for the text, cultural
transmission, and springing to mind different opinions; they have stated that the method
takes so much time.
