Abstract
Art Education of Individuals with Disabilities in Turkey: An Evaluation Through Graduate Dissertations
In this study, it is aimed to evaluate the visual arts education carried out for
individuals with disabilities in Turkey by using meta-synthesis method through the
postgraduate dissertations. Within the scope of the study, 34 postgraduate dissertations
including 27 master's and 7 doctorate dissertations covering the relevant subject between
2000-2019 were examined. Studies were accessed from CoHE National Thesis Center
database. Studies that are not open to access in the database were reached through the
Library and Documentation Department of our institution. The graduate dissertations
included in the study were analyzed with content analysis. In this context, the studies
were examined in the context of the publication year, the university where they were
conducted, the purpose of the study, research method, data collection tools and samples.
Themes and codes obtained from the data were transformed into tables and graphics
and then interpreted. Accordingly, it was revealed that the analyzed master dissertations
were mainly between the years 2008-2011 and doctoral dissertations started to be studied
towards recently. It was seen that most of the studies aim at the artistic development of
disabled individuals and the contribution of visual arts education to the education of
disabled individuals. It was concluded that the studies were conducted with a quantitative
approach and quantitative data collection tools such as questionnaires, scales and tests,
and accordingly, the sample varied.
