Abstract
Bitlis Castle Storage Area Ceramic Finds
Tile and ceramic finds uncovered during the 2020 excavations in Bitlis Castle, located
on a rocky area in the center of Bitlis Province, will be discussed and examined in our
study. Ceramics are at the top of the list of the most intense finds uncovered during the excavations. The few tiles finds in the area are quite remarkable in terms of the region.
During the studies carried out in 2020, a wall dividing the area considered as a palace
and the remains of a wall belonging to a longitudinal rectangular space were unearthed.
The storage containers in the northeast corner of the wall dividing the area indicate that
this place was used as a warehouse. The forms are seen in the storage containers suggest
that unglazed ceramics may have been used for different functions. Ceramics, most of
which are understood to be from the Late Ottoman period, were also found in a tandoor
used for cooking next to the warehouse space of the area. Tile and ceramic finds of 2020
were dated between the 17th century and the beginning of the 19th century as a result of
the data obtained from architectural remains and coins.
