Abstract
The Measure of Silence and Speech: Samt
Sufis, who set out with the aim of raising moral people, apply a difficult spiritual
education called seyr u leech in order to achieve this goal. Riyazah and mujahada It is
one of the important elements of this education. Eating less, sleeping less and talking less
are the basis of riyazah. The act of less and proper speech, and the act of silence when necessary, which gains value with the other methods mentioned, are called samt by the
Sufis. Samt, which is considered one of the indicators of spiritual maturity, is one of the
mystical states. This concept has a meaning area that starts with the effort to protect
from the disasters of language, the indicator of accepting the judgment of Allah and
going to be astonished and silent in the face of divine majesty. In the modern world and
human model, which is fictionalized with the claim of polyphony, not hearing the other
has turned into a communication problem. In this context, the practices put forward by
the Sufis within the framework of the principle of samt can be considered as an alternative
proposal to the solution of modern crises. In this article, in which text analysis method
was used, the meaning areas of the concept of samt were examined, and how the Sufis
used this concept while expressing Sufi practices were emphasized.
