The Comparison of Achievement and the Pencil Grip and Reading-Writing Skills of First Grade Students with Different Calendar Ages Abstract
First grade in primary school is a period gained many basic skills. The skills gained in the first grade also affect subsequent academic term of students. The purpose of the study is to examine comparatively in the age range 60-71, and 72-84 months of first grade students’ reading, writing and using pen skills, attendance and academic achievement situations. This study is a descriptive survey research. This study is a case study and has been designed according to the qualitative research approach. The working group has been selected according to the criteria sampling method. The study group has been constituted 38 primary first-class students and their 19 teachers. The research data were collected through observation, interviews and document analysis. When considering the findings of this study,it is noted that there is no difference between students with 72-84 months and students with 60-71 months in terms of attendance. It is also seen that the quality of writing and writing skill is better in favor of student who is elder one in some student pairs and it is better in favor of the younger student in other student pairs. Equal number students from both groups have problems that need to be corrected in using the pencil correctly. It is determined all of the other students used the pen correctly. Findings indicate the elder children’s total reading skills scores higher than the others. Results show that more than half of the students in different age range in the class is equivalent or close to each other in terms of the level of achievement. In the light of the findings, it is recommended for parents to consider some factors such as social, psychological and physiological maturation and readiness of student beside the age variable in determination of school age for students.
