Abstract
Religious Sects and Religious Education in the Indian Subcontinent
Religious sects and education in the Indian subcontinent is investigated in this study. These sects, which arouse in the period of British colonisation, were an outcome of the effords to preserve Islamic identity of the people. In this period, Indian muslims entered a renewal period which had reflections on the educational field also. Some of the religious sects preserved the traditional madrassa system while others established modern institutions with formal education. These different sects which contributed to the religious education system of Indian subcontinent is classified in this study as three different groups: Traditionalists, innovators, compromisers.
