Abstract
Amok Attacks and Intervention Technique
Today Amok assaults which cause mass murder and injuries as a result of indiscriminate
and random shootings by people with psychosocial traumas in general has been a frequent
phenomenon in industrialized countries. Amok attacker called active shooter continues his/her
killing action until committing suicide or being stopped by police at crime scene. In order not to have higher rates of casualties in Amok assaults with little to no early warnings, it is essential for first responding units to be well trained and prepared. It is seen that first responding police officers working in regular patrol units in Turkey, except for tactical teams, are not properly trained in these kinds of events. It is discussed in this study how first responding officers canrespond fast and effectively to Amok-like armed assaults until the arrival of tactical units on scene and how Amok training can be incorporated in current police trainings in our country by examining methods developed by the police training units in the United States and Germany where Amok cases occur frequently.
