Abstract


An Examplary Study on the Use of the Game of Satranc-ı Urefa in the Values Education During Preschool Period
The aim of this research is to adapt the game of Satranc-ı Urefa in the values education of preschool children; to identify the influence of this game in values education as well as to determine the students’ views on this game. In this research, an educational game has been developed in order to use it in the values education of preschool students by incorporating the foundational principles of Satranc-ı Urefa which was a game founded in India 1500 years ago and had been used to appropriate Islamic mysticism in the Ottoman Empire. The sample of study consisted of 16 students aged 5 to 6 from two private preschool institutions that were based in the provincial centre of Erzurum during the academic year of 2013-2014. The qualitative research method was used in this research along with the document analysis method to collect data. The data was collected by semi-structured interviews, unstructured observations as well as the game developed by the researchers. As a result of the study, it is concluded that the developed game can be applied as an educational game to aid the students to appropriate values and adapt these values into behaviour.
