Abstract
Map Usage in the 5th and 6th Grade Social Sciences Books
The aim of this study is to investigate the map usage in the 5th and 6th grade social
sciences books (by The Ministry of National Education “MEB”, and private publishing
houses). For this purpose, 5th and 6th grade textbook that was prepared by MEB Board of
Education and private publishers in the 2013-2014 academic year subjected to descriptive
analysis, the number of maps used in the study books, the distribution of the its kinds and
the unit has been examined. In addition to this, it is stated that getting obtained about
map skills by investigating Social Sciences Teaching Program. In this study, document
analysis method that is one of the qualitative research methods was used. In this study,
aimed sample method that is the criterion sampling methods was used. Outcome of the
study shows, total number of 12 maps in the 5th Grade Social Sciences book, total number
of 30 maps, 1 sketch and 4 spheres in the 6th grade Social Sciences book prepared by
private publishing houses. It is observed that, in the total number of 57 maps and 1 sphere
in the 5th grade Social Sciences Book, in the total number of 38 maps and 7 spheres in the
6th grade Social Sciences Book were used which were prepared by MEB. The outcomes
observed by analyzing the kinds of maps used by its distribution among units and its
sufficiency degrees were given a place with charts.
