Abstract


Social Studies in the Village Institutes and Teacher Schools Program of 1953
The aim of this study is the village Institutes, which was established by the 'Village Institutes Law' dated 17 April 1940 and numbered 3803 and officially closed by the 'Law on the Unification of Village Institutes and Teacher Schools' dated 27 January 1954 and published as the third program in the village institutes in 1953. and the examination of the 'social studies' lesson according to certain criteria within the framework of the Teacher Schools Program. How the term "social studies", used for the first time with this program, is handled in this program has been examined according to the determined criteria. In this framework, the weekly course distribution schedule, general purposes, explanations, units and topics to be covered and course tools to be used in the program were used as criteria. For this purpose, the study was designed in accordance with the historical research model, one of the qualitative research methods. The data were collected using the document review technique. Descriptive analysis approach was used in the analysis of the obtained data according to the criteria determined in accordance with the aims of the study. In this context, the Village Institutes and Teacher Schools Program published in 1953 was examined according to the determined criteria and the weekly course distribution schedule, general purposes, explanations, units and subjects to be covered and the course materials to be used in the program were presented in tables. As a result, the program in which the term social studies was used for the first time in Turkey was the Village Institutes and Teacher Schools Program, social studies were included in the first cycle of the village institutes by a teacher to cover the subjects of history, geography and citizenship, and in the second period, under the name of social studies, geography and citizenship courses are seen as independent courses and planned to be taught by branch teachers.
