Biology Student Teachers’ Cognitive Structures about “Enzyme” (Erzurum example)
The aim of this study is to determine the prospsective biology teachers’ cognitive structures about “enzyme” subject by detecting their conceptual structures. A qualitative research method was used in this study. The data were collected from totally 50 prospective biology teachers who attended to 4th and 5th grade. The data collection tools included in the free word-association test and the drawing-writing technique. The data obtained were analyzed through content analysis method and tabulated with frequency values as descriptive statistics. The model of the prospective biology teachers’ cognitive structures about enzyme concept was prepared by using Vue program. At the end of research, the data were collected under 7 categories (the structural property of the enzyme, the definition and properties of the enzyme, the necessity of the enzyme, the working model of the enzyme, the factors affecting the enzyme function, the functions of enzyme and types of enzyme). Besides, it was determined that the prospective biology teachers had some alternative concepts relating to enzymes. Finally, some recommendations were suggested about subject.
